GLENDALE, AZ – April 2, 2016 — Glendale Aero Services (GAS), a full-service fixed-based operator (FBO), has received Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) maintenance & overhaul authorization.

“Along with being a Cirrus Authorized Service Center, GAS technicians have been trained and certified to replace parachutes and ballistic rocket motors for the CAPS system on Cirrus aircraft,” said John Fisher, GAS maintenance director. “The Cirrus CAPS system is the most popular example of an aircraft with a parachute system.”

Glendale Aero Services (GAS) Named Cirrus-Authorized CAPS Parachute Re-certification FacilityAs an authorized facility, GAS has been approved by Cirrus and licensed by the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) as well as the Department of Transportation who monitors the maintenance and handling of the ballistic rocket portion of the system.

The airframe parachute (CAPS) system requires re-certification / replacement of the parachute and rocket motor every 10 years. These two components as well as the reefing line cutters, which are also a pyrotechnic device, are all life-limited parts. They are part of the Type Certificate of the aircraft, and therefore airworthiness is contingent upon their life-limited status.

There have been 78 CAPS deployments since the aircraft’s market introduction in 1999 to March 24, 2016, with a 100% success rate and zero fatalities for the 64 deployments when the system was deployed within the CAPS system design parameters, e.g., above 1000ft AGL and less than 200 KTS indicated airspeed.
